Back to FAQ index Previous FAQ: Why Is Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Important? Is EQ Just Another Catchy Marketing Phrase? Yes and no. The theory behind EQ emerges directly from pure psychology. If you think about it psychology - since its early beginnings - has always studied the role of emotions. But, the phrase 'emotional intelligence' has popularised what psychology has known for many decades. This has made it possible to apply a far more practical version of psychology to everyday living. If you have any doubts about EQ, put it to the test. Consider the children you were at school with. Who succeeded later in life? Were they the ones who typically got the highest grades or do our success stories today emerge more often from those who were average scholastic performers? Although there are exceptions, many of today's success stories scraped through school but learnt many other valuable life-skills along the way. Obviously this doesn't mean top grades will lead to failure later in life. This would be a ludicrous claim. Nevertheless the important message from EQ thinking is having a high IQ is no guarantee for success in adult life. Clearly social and emotional skills are more valuable predictors of performance than intellectual ability. Next FAQ: What Can A South African Add To This American Concept?
