Stephanie answers some FAQs... |
Back to FAQ index Do Women Naturally Have A Higher Level Of EQ Than Men? This is a myth I often encounter and the answer is definitely not. Men and women have different emotional issues to deal with and these are rooted in their upbringing. As little girls, women were taught to handle the emotional lives of the family and that's why women find it easier to deal with emotions than men. Men - on the other hand - were taught that feelings are 'pink blouse' girl's stuff and should be suppressed. As part of the traditional rearing process (which unfortunately is still very evident today) girls are permitted to be more emotional. However this process also knocks a women's self-esteem. She is literally taught to believe that everyone else's needs and wants are more important than her own. Therefore she may be more emotionally expressive but other equally important areas such as self-worth require a lot of hard work in women. Likewise, men have less problems in areas like self-value but the process of suppressing emotions was more severe than being told 'cowboys don't cry'. From an early age boys learn that emotions are a source of shame. Therefore when a man attempts to become more emotionally aware he is confronted with this deep-rooted shame, which must be worked through before he can access his naturally rich range of feelings. Therefore although women may be off the starting blocks a little sooner than men, it's a man's self-value that will keep him afloat in the water. The issues for men and women are different and neither have an easier time than the other overcoming the emotional problems of traditional rearing.
